8 signs your gutters are blocked, and what to do about it

Blocked gutters rarely announce themselves. By the time water is pouring down the wall, the problem has usually been building for a while. The good news is that most of the warning signs are easy to spot from the ground, long before a blockage turns into damp walls or a costly repair. Here are eight to look out for on your home or commercial building in Banbury and the wider Oxfordshire area.
1. Water overflowing during rain
The clearest sign of all. If you see water spilling over the edge of the gutter rather than running to the downpipe, something is stopping it flowing. Watch your gutters during the next downpour, it is the quickest way to find a blockage.
2. Plants, moss or grass growing in the gutter
A gutter full of soil, leaves and moss becomes a surprisingly good planter. If you can see greenery sprouting along the roofline, there is enough trapped debris up there to hold water and seeds, and it needs clearing.
3. Green or brown streaks down the outside
Staining down the front of the gutter, or down the wall beneath it, is a sign that water has been sitting and overflowing rather than draining away. Those marks tend to get worse the longer a blockage is left.
4. Gutters sagging or pulling away
Wet debris is heavy. When a gutter fills up, the extra weight can make it sag in the middle or pull away from the fascia board. Any section that looks like it is drooping or coming loose needs attention before it fails.
5. Damp patches on the walls
If water cannot get away through the gutter, it runs down the walls instead. Damp patches, watermarks or discoloured brickwork below the roofline often trace back to a blocked or overflowing gutter above.
6. Pooling water near the foundations
Downpipes are meant to carry water away from the base of the building. If you notice water pooling, or soil washing away, close to the foundations, the gutters or downpipes may not be doing their job.
7. Birds and pests around the roofline
A gutter packed with nesting material is both a cause and a sign of a blockage. If birds or pests are taking a keen interest in your roofline, it is worth a closer look.
8. Peeling paint or rust on the guttering
Standing water and constant damp wear down guttering over time, leading to peeling paint on timber, or rust and corrosion on metal. It is a sign the gutter has been holding water it should have been shedding.
What to do about it
If you spot any of these signs, do not leave it. A blockage only gets worse, and the damage it causes, damp walls, rotten fascias and problems at the foundations, costs far more to put right than a simple clear. Start by checking the downpipes as well as the gutters, since blockages often form at the outlets.
It is tempting to tackle it with a ladder, but working at height is where gutter cleaning gets risky, especially on wet or slippery surfaces. A professional team can clear everything safely from the ground and check for early signs of damage at the same time.
At Aston Property Maintenance, we clear blocked gutters for homes and businesses across Banbury and Oxfordshire, safely from the ground with a high reach vacuum system, and we install and repair guttering too. If any of these signs sound familiar, request a free, no obligation quote and we will get your gutters flowing again.
