How often should you clean your gutters? A seasonal guide for Oxfordshire homes

One of the questions we are asked most often is a simple one. How often should I clean my gutters? The honest answer is that it depends on your property and its surroundings. To make it easy, here is a simple seasonal guide, along with the signs that tell you it is time, and a few tips to keep the job to a minimum.
The general rule: twice a year
For most homes, clearing the gutters twice a year is enough to keep them flowing, once in autumn and once in spring. Those two clears deal with the two biggest sources of debris, falling leaves in autumn, and blossom and seeds in spring.
When you might need to do it more often
Some properties need a closer eye than others. You may need to clear your gutters more frequently if:
there are trees close to the house, especially those that shed heavily
your property is older, with gutters that catch debris more easily
the roof is shaded or north facing, where moss and damp linger
you have just had a spell of stormy weather
A season by season guide
Autumn. This is the important one. As the leaves come down they fill gutters quickly, so a thorough clear once most of the leaves have fallen sets you up for winter.
Winter. You do not usually need to clear gutters in the cold, but do check them after storms. Blocked gutters that freeze put extra strain on the brackets, and overflowing water in freezing conditions is best avoided.
Spring. Clear away the blossom, seeds and anything left over from winter, and check that everything came through the colder months intact.
Summer. The quiet season for debris, and the best time to deal with any repairs or new guttering, while the weather is on your side.
Signs your gutters need attention now
Whatever the calendar says, clear your gutters sooner if you notice any of these:
water spilling over the edge during rain
plants or grass growing out of the gutter
green streaks or staining down the outside
gutters sagging or pulling away from the roofline
damp patches on the walls or near the foundations
A few tips to keep the job to a minimum
You can reduce how often your gutters need clearing with a little forward planning. Trim back any branches that overhang the roof, consider gutter guards if you are on a leafy plot, and keep an eye on the downpipes, as that is where blockages often start.
Staying safe
It is tempting to grab a ladder and do it yourself, but working at height is where gutter cleaning gets risky, particularly on wet or slippery surfaces. A professional team can clear everything safely from the ground and check for early signs of damage at the same time.
At Aston Property Maintenance, we look after gutters for homes and businesses across Banbury and the wider Oxfordshire area. We clear them safely from the ground with a high reach vacuum system, and we install and repair guttering too.
